The Time Has Cometh!

World Cup 2010 logo

The Official FIFA world cup is approaching the 100 year mark since its beginning in 1930 in Uruguay.

It took forty years before the world saw an African country participate in the world cup. Morocco became the first country to qualify in 1970’s Mexico City world cup. The team lost in the first round to Peru; 3 – 0, but at least they made it to the stage.

20 more years passed before an African Team went past the first round.

It was in my lifetime in Italy 1990; I like many African kids from the entire world watched as Roger Milla of Cameroon substituted in the second half to steal the ball from the long haired Colombian goalie and score the goal that sealed the deal for the African team to go to the Quarter Finals. Cameroon eventually lost to England 3-2, but this was the moment.

The moment from which, I like my friends and all African Kids I suspect, switched from idolizing the Diego Maradonas, Lothar Matthäus, and Ruud Gullits to the Roger Milla’s and the Jay-Jay Okocha’s.

It will be another twenty years to 2010 before we witness another first. South Africa to host the World-Cup; I hope to make to the mother land to catch sight of this with my own eyes.

And Optimistically it wont takes another 20 years before we see an African team take the trophy home.

    Nol,

My prediction: We will see a world champion from Africa on or before 2022.

African individuals are already making headlines in Europe in fairly good numbers…European coaches are heavily recruiting in Africa….That will definitely translate into an african world champion in the next 10-15 years.

    wiit,

If u have high speed internet, google TVU and/or TVants and download these two internet TV softwares. You can pretty much watch any soccer game anywhere in the world live as it happens for free.

In terms of the heads-up about what is on this week this site gives you everything and tells you which one of your TV players to use. http://www.myp2p.eu/

Wiit, you don’t need satellite to watch the games. There are cable channels like GolTV that show it.

WHo’s happy Italy lost, they called it ‘orange crush’ in the news here. I liked that.

Security concerns in South Africa these days could affect a reversal on FIFA’s decision to have SAR host soccer’s #1 event. I just don’t trust its executives due to a reputation they held of not only overturning candidacy of bidding countries but they have been on the otherside of FIFA’s “Say no to racism” campaign from time to time.

Meron - I was happy to see Italy got their butt kicked by a mediocre team like the Dutch.

Another great game today Portugal vs Czech rep!

    Wiit,

if you don’t have other choices, you can watch it on ESPN also. another amazing game yesterday. it was so exciting to watch spain crushing russsia.

The Uncle, i hope FIFA does not reverse its decision. i think south africa is perfect choice for fifa 2010 games. there is nothing that SA can’t do to eliminate security concerns. i just can’t fathom the arguement against it.

I hope the South Africans will live up to the expectations that come with such an event….my worries do not stem from issues about infrastructures, i am worried more about how well mannered the general population will be…come june 2010.

Italy deserved to lose…..but the Dutch were not any better…may be luckier.

I am for Spain…and may be the Croats.
