Officially self proclaimed Dancer - Choreographer – Teacher specializing in African, Hip Hop & Belly Dancer.
Located in Toronto, and she teaches various dance classes. Saba is from Addis Ababa and has spent much of her life exploring, training and performing “in styles such as Congolese Soukous, West African, Hip Hop and Belly Dance.”
She has been featured in the Ethio-Canadian brother sister duo of rapper Rasselas’s and singer Helena videos. Her resume is longer than, well really long; in other words very accomplished and really betam sexy nech. Forgive the descriptive words.
You can learn more about Saba Alemayehu Asfaw on her website.
What I am sure about is that she looks like Helena whose last name I don’t know but I suspect is Asfaw. Which would mean that its her sister and Rasselas her brother. If so, they are very accomplished musical family. Well, atleast Saba is.

Big ups to Saba! Beautiful, very-talented (videos don’t lie)and innovative… definitely inspiring to young Ethiopians.
Saba is hot… the ‘Sabina’ implies we all are entitled to atleast one night with her then she can decide her alpha male. Even after for as long as she goes by Sabina, any junior can unseat the alpha male.
Saba is so down to earth and drop dead gorgeous at the same time. I took her class but I sucked so I dropped out!! A woman pursuing her passion is oh so inspiring,,keeping doing you Saba Sabina.
Loving Helena’s “Yefikir Tiyake”… thanks for sharing!
Helena’s music is a piece of crap. sorry!
Crap!
I usually feel insulted when some habeshas try to dump their crap assuming that we will buy it because we are habeshas too. This is stupid! If you want to give me rap music or hip hop dance, just do it at least as equally good as the real once do it. I did not like the entire Sabina dance or that crack head’s ‘rap’.
To each his own but I like that song. And will continue to listen to it on YouTube (no purchase). But I do agree that you should be selective in what you choose to support.
Rasselas…song remix Aster song “Etetee..”……i find it awesome..awesome…the rest i didn’t buy it that much..

I appreciate and respect what the trio are doing as far as dance and music. I loved some of Helena’s songs esp. yefekir teyaki, and some of Rasselas’ works as well as Saba’s Chreography. I think we should encourage and support young artists for their collaborative efforts and creativity and we should be able to see our female artists beyond their ‘hotness’ I know it sells but let’s not forget to comment on their talent… shall we??
‘Nways two thumbs up for the three of you…..good start!
Is she single?
Well, do you people go to an Ethiopian restaurant to get awesome Chinese food? Do you people prefer pita bread to injera to eat that delicious ‘doro wat’ your mother sent you?
The thing is … if I want to listen to rap music, I would definitely go with tupac, Kanye West, Jay Z, Nas, Ludacris, or even Lil Wayne. I would not even give a single chance for this wanna be ‘rapper’ Rassales. If I want to see hip hop dance, belly dancing, or African dance, I wouldn’t waste my time on those slow and boring Sabina’s moves while I can stop by a club on my way home and see the real ones hit it or I can simply search on you tube ‘the best hip-hop dance’ and…you know.
Let us make a bet! I bet I can randomly pick one dancer from one of the ‘mesheta bets’ in addis or anywhere in Ethiopia and she will be much much better than Sabina. I bet I can pick one local live club rapper and he will be very much better than that nonsense Rassales.
Hey, let us get real! Art is a profession too. If you cannot do it, do not do it! It is like to see a less qualified habesha dentist going around his country people and provide less quality service. Come on! I do not want my wedding tuxedo to be made by ‘ye shero meda shemane’, I also do not want my ‘meles kaba and neche tenefanef’ to be made by Chinese tailor.
wow flat stomach new mibalew or what…I havent met alot of borcham abesha set, but alot of borcham wendoch lol…seriously how hard is it to do 50 situps, 50 pushups a day, and jog 30 minutes 3X a week, u’ll be buff. Add to that some pullups here and there, don’t even need a gym.

Nolawi - what has gotten into you? I have been away for a quick minute and i come back and see who? Saba? C’mon need some real post with Bernos flavor.
Are you facing writer’s block? lol
Sounded like some kind of promo that i had to double check the URL i had typed.
Anyhow, bottom line is i know dancers who would take her to school in Addis.
lol dr, indeed good critique…. but i think like others this is a legitimate topic not a promo piece… because we need to talk about abesha people doing different things….
Look the post is about Saba not her brother or sister.. so stop hating peoples. Saba is know for her dance and maybe people in Ethiopia dance better than her but that is not the point.. point is she is doing it here and doing it well, she is promoting the culture and has built a successful business out of it.. so it is something to congratulate and encourage her.. It’s good to keep it real but some encouragement my people goes along way.. geez!!
Curious so they are her brother and sister??
yes, they are all siblings! I personally know them and their Dance Troup nouvelle expose is great and perform at major festivals and Saba trains real hard and takes her art very seriously.
“Come on! I do not want my wedding tuxedo to be made by ‘ye shero meda shemane”
As Nolawi would say, f**ken booring! Shero meda shemane’s rock! Guess who’s working in the background making the famous ethio-designers look good?
oooo sexy mama….can i halla ?!?
masinkomelody,
There is no one tuxedo made by ‘ye shero meda shemane’ on earth. Hard to see how they rock?! I completely agree when it comes to our culteral clothes, they really are good at it…at least upto now. Who knows what will come next, we may see some ‘netela and gabis’ made by china.
Mamo… what can I say…your name says it all!
Take your falacious arguments to your ‘mesheta bets’
Tsedey,
What is wrong with my name or with ‘mesheta bets’?
Ya, you can’t say anything because what I said was right and you didn’t like it. Chances are, you are one of those confused wanna be ‘fernjis’.
You gotta appreciate these young artists.
Mamo, if you don’t like what they do just keep it to yourself. Why are you imposing your dislike on some of us who might enjoy their art regardless of the flaws?
I remember, a while ago someone wrote a piece on Gosaye (i think Addis Journal that is), and soon people were busy commenting how Teddy’s the best and making all other stupid comments that are not related to Gosaye whatsoever. The blog about Gosaye turned out to be Teddy’s in the end, which was so unfortunate and disturbing. Some people either don’t know what to say when or are full of themselves.
Here again similar thing is happening. The blog is about Saba but some of the comments are about Kebede and Abede. What is wrong with some people? Just because you don’t like something it does not mean others feel the same way. Why can’t you acknowledge that some of us appreciate what this girl is doing.
To be honest with you, Mamo especially, I actually don’t like Jay Z’s music (who apparently seems one of your musical gods). But would it be nice if I come and tell you again and again how I think Jay Z’s music is crap compared to Bob Marley? Would that make you feel happy? I guess not. I am sure Jay Z has his own style, so does Bob Marley. And they both deserve appreciation for whatever they do individualy. If you can’t appreciate then just leave it that way. Stop attacking people just because they don’t think like you.
Anyway, I am loving this re-mix:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IPcT5irmBtE
the choreography is nice. the music video is awesome. and I think one of the female dancers is Saba. She is good. (I wonder how Aster would react to this one :)).
E, luv the video…
I think they have HUGE potential!!
…Let me just say that Saba is a really really great dancer. She does a variety of African dances including bellydancing. She’s so good that she teaches classes and performs at a lot of cultural events (African and others) all around town. And as to how “girls in Addis would take her to school”, to tell you the truth, dancing involves a lot more than the ability to shake one’s ass…which is ALL I’ve been seeing in Ethiopian-made music videos for….quite some time. I have no personal connection with Saba, so my views could not be more unbiased.
Hating and being negative among Abesha people is not something new.I guess it makes them feel important or better than the person they are hating on most probably envious about.I have seen similar comments about Zeritu and Abby. Lighten up people it is not always about you.
“African dances including belly dancing”
Interesting didn’t know it originated in Afrika maybe that’s the problem
E,
My replies to your comments:
“You gotta appreciate these young artists”
Looks like an order from E. Is it a must to appreciate?
“Mamo, if you don’t like what they do just keep it to yourself. Why are you imposing your dislike on some of us who might enjoy their art regardless of the flaws? “
Well, another order from E. What if I tell you the same thing? If you LIKE what they do just keep it to yourself. Why are you imposing your ADMIRATION on some of us who might NOT enjoy their art with all the flaws?
“I remember, a while ago someone wrote a piece on Gosaye (i think Addis Journal that is), and soon people were busy commenting how Teddy’s the best and making all other stupid comments that are not related to Gosaye whatsoever. I think this was all crap. It was a little hard for me to understand what you were trying to say. This all paragraph has nothing to do with your other points or with this Sabina issue. If you were trying to mention that some “full of themselves” people’s comments are usually unrelated to the main subject then what do you think you were doing yourself? Teddy and Gosay have nothing to do with Sabina. By the way, what is the problem if people talk about unrelated things? After all this is just a blog, people don’t have to be instructed what to write and what not to write. If you have something to argue or agree with them, then go ahead. Who are you after all to tell somebody what to write and not to write? This is a place where we should be communicating different ideas; it is not some kind of regulated office logbook.
“To be honest with you, Mamo especially, I actually don’t like Jay Z’s music (who apparently seems one of your musical gods). I don’t really care if you are honest with me or not, I just read your comments. Ok, you don’t like Jay Z…that is fine with me. I completely agree with you at this point, it is your interest. The problem is though; I didn’t say he is my musical god or whatever. My point was, if I want rap music then I would go with the real ones. Funny thing, you tried to compare Bob Marley and Jay z… it is like to compare Tiger with Kobe. Well, did I say Sabina has to think like me? By the way, I just gave my comment…it is not attacking. The thing is, you have no idea that comments should not always be appreciations.
Mamo, okay dude, whatever you say.
Based on your response to my comment and the things you wrote earlier, including the ff:
“Ya, you can’t say anything because what I said was right and you didn’t like it. Chances are, you are one of those confused wanna be ‘fernjis’.”
it seems you can argue over anything to prove that “you are always right.” So there is no point wasting my time with you, buddy.
You are one of those people born to understand nothing about constructive criticism.
So go ahead and BS anything you want. This is just a “blog” after all.
Still I appreciate Saba’s contribution to Ethiopia’s art in diaspora:

“African dances including belly dancing”
Interesting didn’t know it originated in Afrika maybe that’s the problem
Tsegure,
Yes, it originated in Africa, Northern Africa-Egypt, Morocco- the orientals. Anyway… what is the problem again? I didn’t get that part.
Thanks Tsedey for sharing the Seleme dance.
lol it seems they all having a lot of fun…I felt jealous.
the editing is superb.
A lot of tid for tad here huh?
