TG Died!

tigist shebebaw

I don’t know much of Tigist Shibabaw except that I first heard her voice on bole2harlem’s album. Needless to say how much I appreciated that album because it was pure quality.

Yesterday night I heard she passed away unexpectedly. No details were given on what happened but this is truly sad. She had an amazing voice and a fruitful career ahead of her.

Sad news for all music lovers, Podcasted is Enseralen Gojo featuring the vocal styling of Tigist Shibabaw. Rest in Peace!

Ende, that is so sad! I don’t know TG either except on the Bole 2 Harlem CD but I know Gigi as well as her siblings that live in the Bay Area. Wow, may God rest her soul in peace and be with her family. What is going on in our community? So much of our youth is dying for one reason or another.

Are you serious did she kill herself?

  15. 15 Kali

She hang herself (rasewan sekela new yetegegnchwe) herself in Addis Ababa , in her family house Gergi.I feel sorry for her.She have a selfish family they all live of their own.

  16. 16 Nolawi

    wow that is sad..

  17. 17 ÜberMan

Kali - Are you serious? B^tch kills herself & all you can do is blame the family? Get a life man or better yet hang yourself too so you can join her & we can call your family “selfish”. What a lame a$$ comment to make.

  18. 18 KT

UberMan…….a little respect for the dead maybe….chill out with the name calling. You can make your point without the words with special characters.

  19. 19 Kali

UberMan… it is a fact of life everyone of us need some one in our life to support us specially in bad times and Tigist’s family did not do that I think you miss understood me. She needs help and support at that time but she did not get that from her family especially from her sister’s believe if she got someone to listen her problems and help her, she would be alive but. I am really sorry for her.By the way do u know who is Tigist she is a sister of the singer GiGi and Sofia Shibabaw Gospel Singer

REST IN PEACE ZULU!!! I wish your family get comfort from the Lord.

  21. 21 Confused

Poor Tigist,RIP, poor family may you get comfort from each other.

A suicidal person is not always easy to stop, if they are depressed enough to want to die they will try, sometimes tragically they will succeed. It is not always known to their friends and family that they feel the way they do.

All the help in the world will not help a person in despair and who is determined to die, even though I am completetly not sure of that and think maybe they can be stopped. Anyway, it is the tragedy of Tigist and her family both.

  22. 22 ÜberMan

KT - Point taken… Sorry for the name calling but I’m still not sure I have respect for her life she herself did not value. But this is gonna take us into another complicated path which I’m not sure I wanna traverse. So I’ll leave it @ this - my she rest in peace!

Kali - You can only help people who want to be helped.

  23. 23 Rahwina

It’s unfortunate that she died so young.
Uberman, laying blames aside, can we acknowledge how sad it is that a person felt there was absolutely no hope…well enough to kill themselves. That’s ofcourse assuming that ppl with sound mind and normally don’t just go and kill themselves but that circumstances push them to do so….I say they’re more weak than selfish.

Sorry about the digressing, but does anyone know about Ababa Tesfaye, from the ETV program, “Yelijoch Gize” being dead?

  26. 26 Rahwina

Nolawi, did you ever get to watch a children’s show on Ethiopian TV (ETV) called “Yelijoch Gizé”? Ababa Tesfaye is a comedian turned children story-teller on that show. It mainly ran about 40 years and was popular mainly with our generation: ppl between the ages of 20 to about 35 or so….for more info…

Surprised TG’s passing hasn’t been widely discussed. Being GIGI’s sister and a musician as well, I wonder if her death is somehow related to sibling rivalry. Might she found unable to overcome her feeling of failure in music in contrast to her sister’s. I hear tidbits that GIGI is estranged from her family, might the same be true of TG. Its sad whatever her demon, it took her life away. Unfortunate her support whether friends or family either didn’t know her situation or were unsuccessful. I think the thought of suicide might be a common occurrence in moments of brief or long depression. I know I have been there. Thanks to all the friends who got me intoxicated or whatever to make life seem fun, exciting and my ordeal so small.

You are right Anon something is wrong in there family. Tigist she was in US for 1998-2005 then is deported to Ethiopian. I suppose no body help her or try to understand her in those times, she was depressed. Anon you are right it is surprising as Tigist passing hasn’t widely discussed. Hello it is because of all the family want to keep their names and they all know they are responsible for her death it is a shame for them. I feel sorry for Tigist. Rest in Peace Tigist

Sofi what is the point of recriminations and the blaming of the family? would any of it bring Tigist Shibabaw back to life? ,and if as you say her death is somehow attributable to her family dont you then think that they live with the knowlede that they could have done more. Dont you think that is painful to them living with that knowledge?..

But suicide is not that simple. All sort of people commit suicide sometimes even people adored and cherished by their friends and families and who are thought to be happy are unbeknown to all struglling with their own internal demons. They dont always ask to be helped nor do they want to be stopped at times such is the despair they feel.

To blame the family of a person who has committed suicide is not only painful to them but it is also to misunderstand suicide and suicidal people. All the love and help in the world wont help a suicidal person intent on dying trapped in their own pain as they are, and many of them wouldnt like their familes blamed for what are are their actions ultimatetly. Lets be kind to the suffering left behind we dont know not add to their pain and grief.

I feel you on this, something is wrong.

Does anyone ever question why we have such a high rate of suicide above most other immigrant groups? We live in the pretend world of the perfect in mind, body, and soul. We all need to question ourselves and face reality a lot of our own are choosing to die instead of live among us!

I am shocked to hear of Tigist’s passing. I used to work with her in NYC at APC and I can say that she was the sweetest of girls. She was quiet and quite introverted but we went out together with other coworkers and she was happy. I am so sorry about her passing. She was a beautiful person, a sensitive person and while I knew her as a pretty happy person. I remember seeing Gigi and her together during that period and cannot say that I heard of any strife between them. Having been depressed myself in my life, it is not easy to get out of depression without support and sometimes even support doesn’t suffice. I wish I had kept in contact with her. Anyway, people should not critisize her choice or family. Life on earth can be hell for some, and even though that is no excuse, I know she is at peace now.

    Tigist, Rest In Peace.

    Love
    M.
