Last time u had the Addis Classic, I didn’t care much for the color, so just ordered one for a friend who I know likes the color. But when I saw it…darn! beTam qochegn…and it was too late! This time I got it….and a better one

Nolawi, It’s true that Addis Ababa isspelled the correct way on the shirts. It seems that this confusion is a never ending one. Several people have a hard time spelling it correctly. I myself spell it both ways on official documents. As far as I know it has always been Addis Ababa sometimes spelled “Addis Abeba”. Sometimes too much creativity can back fire. Excellent shirt!

If that is so , what is wrong if we start to spell Addis Abeba the right way.

sitTa, the correct and official way is the right way. but if you prefer it differently it your prerogative.

the correct way is the right way which is the official way, the way addis ababa has been spelt officially for over hundred years… the way Bahru Zewde spells it in his books.

but lets leave it as your preference…

I am no sure if the correct word for this is “official”——-but, the way I see it, somebody at some point started to write it that way and we have been spelling it that way since then. We have also to remember language always changes. We all know the English language that we currently use is different from that of Shakespearian era English. We also know there are a number of English words that are spelt differently in America from that of England or Europe. All this is an indication that people always try to change how they write and speak a language like they do to other things.

If that is so , what is wrong if we start to spell Addis Abeba the right way. I guess we agree there is a meaning difference b/n “Abeba” and “Ababa”————–.

Please do understand I am not trying to lecture about languages——rather, I am trying to express my preference.

You are right——but what I am saying is that is not the correct way to spell Addis Abeba——–besides,it does not heart to be more creative and unique while we are in such kind of business—–I guess what we do have to be unique and catchy!!——–Indoing so we might have to do the un offical——.

that is the official spelling as far as I know. What we did was look at the spelling of Addis Ababa University!
think about it if the oldest higher education institution in Ethiopia spells it Ababa! we should follow suit.
