I would go run to him to do one of the many things that he does to entertain or teach me. That is when he would put his hand on my back and start singing.
Aba woldiye gedel gebu biye!
Shiskerekeru bedem tenekeru!
Shiskerekeru bedem tenekeru!
Achuldra achuldra! Achuldra achuldra!
He would tap my back consequently with the beat of the song that he is singing. I never knew the meaning but it was engaging and witty. Who is Aba woldye? And why the hell are we singing about him?
That was my grandfather; he could answer any question I ever asked him. He knows everything, so why didn’t I ever ask him the meaning of the song?
Actually I feel the same way about all the songs from our childhood; how come the jib is in the gedel and why is after our Qit? Seriously need the answer, still do!
The songs of our childhood, oh the very many songs! I never really thought about the number of songs we knew?
Ere lijoch lijoch!
eneChawet beTam!
kengedeh lijenet temeleso Aymetam!
mT’s, I wish I had believed it at the time. I would have played harder. I would have had notepads to write all the songs down.
I was never acquainted with a man named Seleshi Demissie; better known as singer & artist Gash Abera Molla who embarked on a "crusade to rid Addis Ababa of trash and to preserve cultural heritage by restoring monuments and beautifying the city by planting palm trees." Podcasted are few songs that reminded me of the good old days. Abish-Geleba, which has parts of the lyrics from what my grandfather used to sing to me; Chereka Dimbuloqa; and Che Belew which happens to be my favorite from the album.
Gash Abera Molla is a genius with the Krar as you will hear! Put your speakers up and Che belew ere che belew…. I don’t know what Che is but for some reason I just want to Che Che Che!
Send this post to a friend

very nice finds! where does one find the CD or the free load???
and as for:
you are in the gedel because you were following efuye gela. i don’t know why the jib is in the gedel. but if it is there and if you are trying to climb out of the gedel, the meatiest part to meboCheQ will not be your ankles but your boooTey!
so, where exactly is the lyric about aba woldiye?
Nolawi, thanks a million for the songs. Man! it’s been ages…especially love the Dembushe gela and Chereka Dembuloka ones….love it! y’all remember ..actually ladies, do you remember Etemete ye’lomi shita…..loved the remix part @ Ke’bete belay Kura sefro…..@

Nolawi che means to ride on a back of someone a horse or your mom’s back:) have you never been asked che che libelih while you were a midget? lezeleh woy malet new. But Gash Abera meant riding a horse I think.
My goodness childhood memory in Addis…very few and far between but this piece brings tears to my eyes. How lucky you are to have been blessed with the time you spent with your grandfather, that’s what you call priceless. Love the songs.
Ok Guys I figured you guys were going to ask where you can find the arif Musiqa by Gashe Seleshi Demissie… I am personally against sharing or giving free Ethiopian music online, since it affects the future products excepts in cases where the musician is unknown to the mass… which i assume this is the case here; if so, then it helps it by promoting the musician(s) so I was not able to find a location where we could buy online except
I found 3 songs the above album! i am going to assume that Ethio Jazz might know more about the album which the podcasted songs comes from. if we are unable to find will upload online! for the likes of Timo's son and shalom shalom…
There are two more songs of Sileshi on http://www.ethiopianow.com/music/netelazema/ (Ethiopianow) music collection
Shalom the part on the top, aba woldiye gedel gebu biye shsiskekeru bedemb tenekeru

So my favorite game when I was growing up was when my, sister and cousins (all 20 of us) would play “Lij lemefelg metenal.” Though I’m in my mid 30’s I wouldn’t mind playing it again-lol
Chereka is a wonderful song–how about hearing a Menelik Wossenachew version arranged by the great Girma Beyene and backed by the All Star Band.
