Sample Aster’s Newest Album! 30 Comments

Asters Album cover

We got the new Aster Aweke 's album. Aster is classic, she never goes out of style. The album is titles Asters Tezetawoch and is distributed through Afrec. We are podcasting the first song of the Album called Fikir Yezognal. The download feature so that people do not share it. Enjoy it and give input.

Nevertheless the timing couldnt be anymore right. ESFNA has annouced that Aster is the performer at the closing ceremony of the soccer festival in Los Angeles. Hopefully we will hear the new songs live.

    Nice, very nice!

Critic’s corner – superb vocal range.
The only flaw, with the talent like hers, the lyrics could have been more electrifying. The word ‘Fikir’ was repeated 42 times (plus or minus!)
That’s like once every 7 seconds.

Overall, an ‘A’ performance. Thanks for sharing guys!

as usual…it sounds like every other Aster song….heavyliy synthesized and over dramatic with the vocals…she sounds like she’s crying and moaning, …anyhow…thank God the likes of Gigi and Woyna are available for the musically progresive like moi….in any case….Astun’ Yimechat!

Zuzu, I thought I was the only one. I am not sure what Kirarae was referring to when he/she said ‘superb’ range. To me, it is the same old Aster with the same old style and same old sound. Oh well, to each his own, I guess.

Quite frankly guys, I really have not followed her musical career that closely to know whether this album is a repeat of her previous performance or not. I have not listened to her music since I saw her on NBC (I think) with David Sanborn a few years back… In any case, my opinion was purely based on the sample that was presented for us to listen. But, I really like to know what it means to be “musically progressive?” I like listening to old Ethiopian Begena music, and Andrea Bocelli, and Sofia Shibabaw. Am I “musically progressive?” Just wondering… ”… Berchuma (a/k/a Kirarae’s conjoined twin brother)

My Dear Berchuma, Musically progressive to me does not mean you have to leave the past behind, not at all…begena is the music of my soul – it makes my heart beat to a whole new rythm when I hear that deep sound of vibration – music of my ancestors! what I meant was to be open and diverse and to grow with the time. that’s all…no harm meant to Astu or you Berchumaye….na’esti lisamih yene anbessa.

I am humbled by your gesture, Zuzu. As we say in the Mother Land, amesegenalehu

I chose for you the following lyrics from one of my favorite artists, Andrea Bocelli’s, Amore CD…

    Bésame, bésame mucho
    Como si fuera esta noche
    La última vez

    English translation…

Kiss me, kiss me a lot,
As if tonight was the last time.

    Amharic translation…

    Samign, samign, samign betamuné
    Kemata behwala, selemalay anchiné

    Thanks,

    Cherekaye….

do you know that’s song…I’m every woman…it’s all in me…..yup! that’s my theme song…so technically there is more than one of me…and also…there is enough love here to go to the moon and back (no pun intended) so no fret….indeed berchuma has been upgraded to wonber and ahunima Sofa honoal….lemanignawm….if you have the desire to be upgraded to the Sun….and leave the darkness to the stars….do tell! I can accomodate you…

Well, thanks Chaka Kahn… I mean, Zuzuye, ;-) but I do my best work at night so I will pass on the Sun and stick with Chereka… Besides, you know where I get my light from right??

But that aside, to do justice to this thread, what do you suppose is the issue with Aster’s and many others who do not show any creativity or originality? I am just curious.

    cherekaye….

to answer your question…why do people get in a rut of doing the same thing over and over and over again….well, there is comfort in familiarity, and also fear of change….those who are spiritually evolved always strive for the new things and new ways of doing things (mostly the new generation) and those from the past are more comfortable with the time tested and true ways of things…this is my opinion….based on this….thou shalt not expect anything new to come out of Aster…in the same token, she has enough fan base that she can sing not only the same style…but the same song over and over and change the packaging and there will be people buying it….I just won’t be the one.

PS- it’s also our culture to stick to what you know….for pete’s sake…we’re using the same farming tills since before the birth of Jesus….hmm!

Astun bedenb yimechat!!! I agree there is some redundancy in some of her music, and also the over synthesied composition and too sketchy lyrics are a minus. However, no Ethiopian singer is yet able to do what she does best, and yes I see change and progress in her music, it is also diverse. The monitor has an interesting review of the said album. Zuzu, with all due repect, where is the progress in Gigi’s music? I wonder if she would be able to progress with a sessile voice that can not move up or down the scales. What happens if Laswell is not there to augment her talent? Remain a one album wonder?

    Hello,
Quiet an interesting discussion here about Aster’s music. While I am not a huge fan of hers, I appreciate and respect her musical talent and contribution to the development of Ethiopian contemporary music. Perhaps there’s at times some redundancy in her music but overall she’s a decent artist. And I think her career will continue as long as she maintains her integrity, by that, I mean staying off “drugs” which most artists find very difficult to do.
