Giambattista Bodoni

bodoni1.gifGiambattista Bodoni is an Italian engraver who designed the font known us Bodoni. He is the first font designer to create variations in stroke thicknesses. He developed a style in which parts of the fonts are hairline thin.

The serifs of Bodoni, in addition to being very thin, are also nearly perpendicular to the main stem, as opposed to the gently sloping serifs of the so-called "oldstyle" typefaces. In addition, the emphasis of stress is very nearly vertical. The result is an overall clean, yet somewhat cold, appearance, both loved and hated by typographers.

modernWe were sent an email asking the name of the font used to creat the header of this website; its Bodoni. Giambatiista influenced many font designers, and a whole set of fonts were designed in his style. Some of you might be familiar with font called 'modern,' which is variation of Bodoni's style. And it is currently used by many large corporations as identity font.  It is said that the font shows style and stability in a classical sense. Thus banks and fashion designer use the font. A good example is the Tiffany diamond company.
